Blessed, then helpless, then silly蒙福，然后无助，然后傻
Old English sælig means blessed, happy, fortunate. German selig, blessed, is a cousin, which is why the old sense still feels plausible once you hear it. The English word did not stay in church. Blessed slid toward innocent, innocent toward helpless, helpless toward foolish. Silly is what remains after the holiness has been patted down into a tease.
The path resembles nice, and it is not the same path. Nice begins in not knowing. Silly begins in being favored. Both end near foolishness, and silly stays closer to the laugh.
Villain falls from a social rank into wickedness. Silly falls from a blessing into harmlessness. Drift is not one direction. It is whatever repeated use will bear.
