A cousin, not a parent是表亲，不是父母
English star comes down from Old English steorra. It was inherited, not borrowed from Greek. Greek astron is a cousin: the two words go back to a shared ancient name for a star. Latin has its own cousin in stella. The learned English family, astronomy and the rest, was built on the Greek word, then imported.
That is why you cannot walk from star to astronomy as a parent walks to a child. You walk sideways, from one branch of a family to another. The resemblance is real. The derivation is not.
No reconstructed ancestral form is printed in this room. The cousin relationship is the claim the dictionaries support, and it is enough to keep the map honest.
Inside English, star has also become a mark, and a celebrated person. Those are metaphors. They did not come from Greek.
英语 star 从古英语 steorra 传下来。它是继承来的，不是从希腊语借入的。希腊语 astron 是表亲：两个词回到一个更早的、表示星的共同名称。拉丁语里的表亲是 stella。英语里那一族学术词，astronomy 以及其余，建在希腊语那个词上，然后再被引进来。
所以你不能像父母走向孩子那样，从 star 走到 astronomy。你是横着走，从家族的一支走到另一支。相似是真的。派生不是。
这间屋子不印出构拟的祖先形式。表亲关系是词典能够支持的说法，也足以让这张地图保持诚实。
在英语内部，star 也成了一种记号，以及一个受人瞩目的人。那是比喻。它们不是从希腊语来的。
