A star with a question mark一颗带着问号的星
Open a historical dictionary at consider and you will often meet a star. Latin considerare is analyzed as com- plus sidus, a star or constellation: to look closely, perhaps as one looks at the heavens. The perhaps is doing real work.
Sidus is not Greek astron. It is not the ancestor of English star. Latin’s ordinary cousin of star is stella. So even if the traditional account is right, consider does not belong in the astro gallery. It is a neighboring room, with a different Latin star inside it.
Whether that star was still a living picture when Romans said considerare, or had already faded into a verb of careful thought, is harder to know than the shape of the word. The museum keeps the traditional analysis, and keeps the question mark on the wall.
在历史词典里打开 consider，你常常会遇见一颗星。拉丁语 considerare 被分析成 com- 加 sidus（星或星座）：仔细看，也许像看天空那样看。那个“也许”在做真正的工作。
Sidus 不是希腊语 astron。它也不是英语 star 的祖先。拉丁语里 star 的普通表亲是 stella。所以即便传统说法成立，consider 也不属于 astro 展厅。它是隔壁的房间，里面是另一颗拉丁语的星。
