The look that goes inside看进里面的那一眼
Latin specere means to look. In compounds the vowel shifts, so in- plus specere becomes inspicere: to look into. English borrowed the finished verb. The letters still show the family, inspect, but the assembly happened in Latin.
To inspect is to take the look inside a thing: a ship, a wound, a set of accounts. The official flavor is English habit as much as Latin inheritance. The root itself only promised a looking-into.
Beside it, respect looks back and becomes regard. Suspect looks from under and becomes mistrust. Same gesture of the eye, three different lives. That divergence is the reason this family is worth a room.
拉丁语 specere 是看。在复合词里元音会变，于是 in- 加 specere 成为 inspicere：向里面看。英语借入的是已经完成的动词。字母仍看得出这一族，inspect，组装却发生在拉丁语里。
inspect 是把目光放进一件东西：一艘船，一处伤口，一套账。公务的味道既是英语的习惯，也是拉丁语的遗产。词根本身只许诺一次向内的看。
旁边，respect 回头看，后来变成敬意。suspect 从下面看，后来变成不信任。同一种眼睛的动作，三种不同的生活。这种分岔，是这一族值得占一间屋子的理由。
