The science of sight, then the picture先是视觉的学问，然后才是图画
Latin perspicere means to look through, to see clearly. Medieval Latin perspectiva named the science of sight, optics, long before it was a compliment paid to a Renaissance painting. The artistic sense, representing depth on a flat surface, became famous later. The mental sense, a point of view, is later still.
It is easy to tell this story backwards and start in Florence. The museum starts with the looking-through. Painters inherited a word that opticians and geometers had already been using.
The root is still specere. The prefix per- pushes the look through. Idea, in the Greek wing of this museum, is also tangled with seeing, and it is not this root. Two families can share a fascination and refuse a common ancestor.
拉丁语 perspicere 是透过去看，看得清楚。中古拉丁语 perspectiva 命名的是视觉的学问，光学，远在它成为对一幅文艺复兴绘画的称赞之前。艺术上的意思，在平面上表现纵深，是后来才著名的。心理上的意思，一种观点，更晚。
这个故事很容易倒着讲，从佛罗伦萨讲起。本馆从“透过去看”讲起。画家继承的是光学家和几何学家已经在用的词。
词根仍是 specere。前缀 per- 把目光推过去。本馆希腊语一侧的 idea 也和看缠在一起，但它不是这条根。两个家族可以共享一种着迷，同时拒绝一个共同的祖先。
