Latin respicere is re- plus specere: to look back at. From the looking came respectus, a regard, a consideration, an aspect under which something is seen. English took the noun and let it deepen.
A respect can still mean a particular regard, as in “in this respect.” It also became the esteem you give a person. The eye turned back, and what it turned back toward acquired weight.
Nothing in the modern word requires you to picture a Roman glancing over a shoulder. The historical cut explains the build. It does not license a new English verb every time you look twice. Inspect looks into. Respect looks back, and stays.
拉丁语 respicere 是 re- 加 specere：回头看。从这种看里生出 respectus，一种看待、一种考虑、事物被看见的一个方面。英语接过这个名词，并让它加深。
respect 仍可以指一种特定的方面，如 in this respect。它也变成你给予一个人的敬意。眼睛转回去，它所转向的东西有了分量。
