Greek idea is related to idein, to see. Early on, an idea is a look, a form, the appearance of a kind of thing. Philosophy, especially Plato’s, asks that form to do heavier work: the idea as what the mind beholds when it knows. Latin and then English inherit the philosophical noun.
The everyday sentence “I have an idea” is a later thinning. The form has become a flicker of thought. The seeing is still in the etymology, and it is Greek seeing, not the Latin specere that built inspect and spectacle. Those rooms share a fascination. They do not share a root.
Academy is the grove where this noun grew heavy. The walk from the grove to the word is a shared story, not a derivation.
