Taken in, and held收进来，并且握住
Latin capere is to take. Concipere is to take in, thoroughly and together: to become pregnant, and also to form a thought. Conceptum is the thing conceived. English concept is that held thought, sharpened over time into a term of art.
The metaphor is physical. The mind takes something in the way a hand closes. Perceive, in the next room, is the same verb with a different prefix: to take thoroughly. Comprehend looks similar and is not the same verb. It comes from prehendere, to grasp. The museum keeps the distinction, because “the mind grasps things” is two Latin pictures, not one.
Idea offers a form to be seen. Concept offers a taking. Between them, English learned to talk about thought as if it were an object.
拉丁语 capere 是取得。Concipere 是彻底地、一同地收进来：怀孕，也形成一个思想。Conceptum 是被构想的东西。英语 concept 是那个被握住的思想，后来磨成一个术语。
这个比喻是身体的。心灵收进一件东西，像一只手合上。隔壁的 perceive 是同一个动词加上不同的前缀：彻底地取得。comprehend 看起来相似，却不是同一个动词。它来自 prehendere（抓住）。本馆保住这个区别，因为“心灵抓住事物”是两幅拉丁语图画，不是一幅。
idea 提供一个被看见的形式。concept 提供一次取得。在两者之间，英语学会把思想说成好像它是一件物体。
