A handful of meaning一把意义
Latin prehendere is to grasp, to seize. Comprehendere grasps together: it can mean to catch hold of, to include, and to understand. The three senses are one hand. English keeps the including and the understanding. “The report comprehends three cases” and “she could not comprehend it” are the same verb, one turned outward, one turned inward.
Concept and perceive come from capere, to take. Comprehend comes from prehendere, to grasp. They are relatives in a wide family of seizing, and they are not the same morpheme. A careful room says so.
Intellect, next, names the faculty that does this kind of knowing. Comprehend is the act. Intellect is the power the act was said to reveal.
拉丁语 prehendere 是抓住。Comprehendere 是一同抓住：它可以是捉住，是包括，是理解。三种意思是同一只手。英语留下了包括和理解。“报告包括三个案例”和“她无法理解”是同一个动词，一个朝外，一个朝内。
