Before academy was a kind of school, it was a place. Greek Akadēmeia was a grove near Athens, named for the hero Akademos. Plato taught there. The proper name became the name of his circle, and then, slowly, a general word for a society of learning, and for a school.
English borrows the institution, not a root you can peel. There is no productive piece called acad- waiting to make new words. The story is a place-name that refused to stay a place.
School, the previous room, began as leisure. Academy began as a grove. Together they are how this museum talks about teaching: not as a list of subjects, but as time and ground that were given to thought.
