Greek scholē means leisure, free time. The educational sense grows from what leisure made possible: discussion, lectures, the company of a teacher. Latin schola already carries the school. Old English scōl takes it from Latin. The building and the bell are much later than the leisure.
This is a meaning that moved, and the movement is the exhibit. A word for time not claimed by work becomes a word for the institution that claims the young. English then adds a further sense that quietly returns to the Greek idea: a school of thought, people who share a method because they had time to form one.
The path through Rome does not own this word. Latin carried a Greek noun. The honest turn is to say so, and then walk on to the grove where Plato taught.
希腊语 scholē 是闲暇，空出来的时间。教育的意思从闲暇使之成为可能的事里长出来：讨论、讲课、与教师为伴。拉丁语 schola 已经带着学校。古英语 scōl 从拉丁语接过它。房子和铃声比闲暇晚得多。
这是一个移动过的意思，移动本身就是展品。一个表示不被工作占用的时间的词，变成一个占用年轻人的机构的词。英语后来又加了一层，悄悄回到希腊语的想法：一个思想的学派，一群因为有时间才形成一种方法的人。
