Latin manus is a hand. Scriptus is written, from scribere. Manuscriptus says the obvious thing, which stopped being obvious once printing existed: this was written by a hand. English takes the compound for a handwritten book, and later for the author’s text, the thing that exists before it is set in type or poured into a file.
Broadcast, on another trail, is what happens when a message is thrown to everyone at once. A manuscript is the opposite scale. One hand, one surface, a text that still remembers the body.
School sits nearby because teaching and copying grew up in the same rooms. The link is a shared story of the written word, not a shared root.
拉丁语 manus 是手。Scriptus 是写下的，来自 scribere。Manuscriptus 说的是一件在印刷出现之后不再显而易见的事：这是一只手写的。英语用这个复合词表示手写的书，后来也表示作者的文本，即在被排成铅字或倒进文件之前就存在的东西。
