The field under the signal信号下面的那块田
Broadcast is an English compound: broad, wide, and cast, to throw. On a farm it named a way of sowing. Seed was cast broadly, scattered in an arc, instead of dropped into a single furrow. The picture is a hand and a field.
Early radio needed a verb for a signal sent to anyone with a receiver, not to one address. It took the farming word. The field became the air. Later the word widened again, to any message offered to a crowd: a broadcast, a broadcast announcement, a thought broadcast to a room.
Manuscript, elsewhere in the museum, is a text written by one hand. Broadcast is the opposite economy: one gesture, many receivers. The sowing is still the honest picture. The microphone is the afterlife.
