Latin subscribere is sub-, under, plus scribere, to write. To subscribe is to write underneath a document: to sign it, to add a name below the words. From the signature comes assent. From assent comes the promise to pay, or to receive, over a stretch of time. A subscription is a name that keeps being honored.
Describe writes the thing down. Subscribe writes the person under it. The difference is the whole social history of the signature: responsibility placed beneath a text.
Broadcast sends a message outward to a crowd. Subscribe is one person writing themselves into a list. The two words meet in the modern media room from opposite directions.
拉丁语 subscribere 是 sub-（在下）加 scribere（写）。subscribe 是写在一份文件下面：签名，在字句之下加上一个名字。从签名生出同意。从同意生出在一段时间里付钱或接收的承诺。一份订阅是一个持续被履行的名字。
