With bread与面包在一起
Late Latin companio is built from com-, with, and panis, bread. A companion is someone you eat with: one loaf, two people. Old French compaignon carried the word into English.
The etymology is social, and it is modest. It does not prove a Roman law of friendship, and it does not require a tableau of soldiers dividing a crust. It says that the language pictured fellowship as shared food. English then wore the word smooth. A companion can be a friend, a spouse in older usage, a fellow traveler, the person simply there.
Salary is a payment. Companion is the person at the table. The Roman walk places them side by side because civic life needed both, not because they share a root.
晚期拉丁语 companio 由 com-（与）和 panis（面包）构成。companion 是与你一同吃的人：一条面包，两个人。古法语 compaignon 把这个词带进英语。
这词源是社会性的，也是谦逊的。它并不证明一条罗马的友谊法律，也不需要一幅士兵分面包皮的图画。它说的是，语言把同伴想象成共享的食物。英语后来把这个词用得很光滑。companion 可以是朋友，在较旧的用法里是配偶，是同行的人，或只是在场的那个人。
