Salt, not a sack of wages是盐，不是一袋工钱
Latin sal is salt. Salarium is built on that noun, and the dictionaries connect it with a payment to Roman soldiers related to salt: money for buying salt, or an allowance reckoned with salt in mind. English salary comes from that payment, through French, and settles into the modern wage.
The story people like to tell next is that soldiers were paid in salt. That is the part to put down. A word built on salt is not a payroll delivered as lumps of salt. The linguistic link is secure. The folk picture overreaches it.
What remains is still strange enough. A sum of money in a bank account carries, in its name, a mineral the ancient world needed for food and for preserving it.
拉丁语 sal 是盐。Salarium 建在这个名词上，词典把它和付给罗马士兵、与盐有关的一笔钱连在一起：买盐的钱，或心里算着盐的津贴。英语 salary 经法语来自那笔支付，并落成现代的工资。
