Latin credere is to believe, to trust, to entrust. Creditum is a thing entrusted, a loan. The financial sense is not a modern metaphor pasted onto a religious word. Trust and the loan grow from the same verb. You give credit when you believe the sum will return, or when you believe a person did the work.
English uses the word for money, for reputation, and for the line in a book that names who is responsible. All three are forms of belief made public.
Calculate, on the Roman walk, is the counting. Credit is the trust that lets a count become a debt. They meet as civic neighbors.
